Lab sample # OSU0005859. Moderately hard when dry. Mat of roots horizontally oriented. Thickness of horizon ranges from 0.5 to 1 inches.
E—3 to 13 centimeters (1.2 to 5.1 inches); pale brown (10YR 6/3), very pale brown (10YR 7/3), dry; Error; massive, and subangular blocky; friable; fragments; gradual boundary. Lab sample # OSU0005860. Upper part of horizon appears to break into very weak irregular thick plates. Hard when dry. The few roots are predominantly horizontally oriented.
EB—13 to 20 centimeters (5.1 to 7.9 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/6), light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4), dry; Error; weak subangular blocky structure; friable; fragments; gradual boundary. Lab sample # OSU0005861. Very hard when dry. Roots with mainly horizontal orientation and show the maximum concentration of any of the horizons below the A.

Weathered olive brown shale fragments (5YR 5/4) surrounding the clayey matrix. Shows very thick shaley lamination.
C2—112 to 127 centimeters (44.1 to 50.0 inches); , moist, manganese coatings; fragments. Lab sample # OSU0005869. Slightly weathered very firm olive brown (5Y 5/4) shale. Roots noted between laminae. Down slope and north of the Coolville site the thickness of the silty upper solum becomes greater.
