A—0 to 15 centimeters (0.0 to 5.9 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) silt loam; weak granular structure; slightly sticky, slightly plastic; 21.0 fine roots; 2 percent fine prominent dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) masses of oxidized iron on surfaces along root channels; 1 percent worm casts; fragments; moderately acid, pH 6.0, hellige-truog; abrupt boundary. Lab sample # 40A34414. Surfaces of some root channels were coated dark brown to dark reddish brown, particularly in the lower part of the horizon.
Bt1—15 to 28 centimeters (5.9 to 11.0 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) silt loam; structureless massive parts to weak medium subangular blocky; firm, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; 0.5 fine roots; 0.5 fine pores; 2 percent fine faint grayish brown (10YR 5/2) iron depletions on surfaces along root channels and 5 percent fine prominent dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) masses of oxidized iron on surfaces along root channels; fragments; strongly acid, pH 5.5, hellige-truog; abrupt boundary. Lab sample # 40A34415. This is the plow sole portion; there is less blanching of root channels and ped surfaces than in the horizons above and below.
