    1A1—0 to 10 centimeters (0.0 to 3.9 inches); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) interior, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) interior, dry; loamy fine sand; loose, very friable, nonsticky; fragments; strongly acid, pH 5.5, hellige-truog; clear boundary. Lab sample # 40A34019. structureless; about the upper inch is darker but apparently caused by fire; contains plentiful tree, grass, and shrub roots.
    1A2—10 to 28 centimeters (3.9 to 11.0 inches); pale brown (10YR 6/3) interior, very pale brown (10YR 7/3) interior, dry; loamy fine sand; loose, very friable, nonsticky; fragments; strongly acid, pH 5.5, hellige-truog; clear boundary. Lab sample # 40A34020. structureless; contains plentiful roots.
    1B21t—28 to 43 centimeters (11.0 to 16.9 inches); light gray (2.5Y 7/2) interior and brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) interior, red (2.5YR 4/8) interior, dry; clay; moderate fine and medium blocky structure; very hard, very firm, very sticky, very plastic; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 5.0, hellige-truog; gradual boundary. Lab sample # 40A34021. roots are mainly between peds but some penetrate peds; outsides of peds are shiny and the gloss appears to be a result of pressure rather than clay films.
    1B22t—43 to 66 centimeters (16.9 to 26.0 inches); clay; moderate medium blocky structure; very firm, very sticky, very plastic; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 5.0, hellige-truog; gradual boundary. Lab sample # 40A34022. prominently & coarsely mottled light gray, red, and some brnish yllw clay; structure not quite as pronounced as in B21t; outsides of peds have shiny pressure faces; common tree roots of coarse to fine sizes.
    1B31t—66 to 97 centimeters (26.0 to 38.2 inches); gray (10YR 6/1) interior, light gray (10YR 7/1) interior, dry; sandy clay; moderate medium and coarse blocky structure; very hard, very firm, very sticky, very plastic; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 5.0, hellige-truog; abrupt boundary. Lab sample # 40A34023. outsides of peds have shiny pressure faces; fine tree roots penetrate the peds
    1B32t—97 to 122 centimeters (38.2 to 48.0 inches); gray (10YR 6/1) interior, light gray (10YR 7/1) interior, dry; sandy clay; moderate medium and coarse blocky structure; very firm, moderately sticky, moderately plastic; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 5.0, hellige-truog; abrupt boundary. Lab sample # 40A34024. roots penetrate peds; peds have shiny surfaces, and some clay films.
    2C1—122 to 165 centimeters (48.0 to 65.0 inches); red (2.5YR 5/8) interior, light gray (10YR 7/1) interior, dry; sandy clay loam; weak blocky structure; firm, moderately sticky, moderately plastic; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 5.0, hellige-truog; diffuse boundary. Lab sample # 40A34025. thin bedded 1/2-2" but the red mottles extnd across some of the thin beds; has occasional yllwish mott.; tree roots penetrate the mass;
    2C2—165 to 213 centimeters (65.0 to 83.9 inches); sandy clay loam; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.5, hellige-truog. Lab sample # 40A34026. similar to above layers in colors, but more coarsely mottled and texture becomes less clayey with depth, probably averaging light SCL
    2C3—213 to 255 centimeters (83.9 to 100.4 inches); red (2.5YR 5/8) interior, light gray (10YR 7/1) interior, dry; fine sandy loam; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.5, hellige-truog. Lab sample # 40A34027. weakly bedded fine sandy loam & loamy fine sand with a few lenses of sandy clay loam (probably averages fine sandy loam); organic stains in crevices and tree roots extend to full depth of the pit.
