Ap1—0 to 23 centimeters (0.0 to 9.1 inches); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) exterior very fine sandy loam; 5 percent clay; weak fine granular structure; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; 1.0 fine roots throughout; fragments; slight effervescence; slightly alkaline, pH 7.6, pH meter; abrupt smooth boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0930. Overwash material. Structure is weakly defined. Bottom inch of horizon has few fine distinct 10YR 5/6 redox accumulations. KSU lab, 10.5% clay, 1.5% OM.
Ap21—23 to 38 centimeters (9.1 to 15.0 inches); black (10YR 2/1) exterior and very dark brown (10YR 2/2) crushed silt loam; 15 percent clay; 3 percent strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) fine prominent irregular mottles; weak medium granular structure; friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; 3.0 fine roots throughout; fragments; noneffervescent; slightly alkaline, pH 7.5, pH meter; gradual smooth boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0931. This layer has a hard pan restricting water movement causing redox features to form. KSU lab 20.4% clay, 2.1% OM.
A1—38 to 53 centimeters (15.0 to 20.9 inches); black (10YR 2/1) exterior and very dark brown (10YR 2/2) crushed silt loam; 14 percent clay; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; 3.0 fine roots throughout; 2 percent fine cylindrical dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) worm casts throughout; fragments; noneffervescent; slightly alkaline, pH 7.6, pH meter; gradual smooth boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0932. KSU lab 15.9% clay, 2.5% OM.
A2—53 to 76 centimeters (20.9 to 29.9 inches); black (10YR 2/1) exterior and very dark brown (10YR 2/2) crushed silt loam; 14 percent clay; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; 1.0 fine roots throughout; fragments; noneffervescent; slightly alkaline, pH 7.5, pH meter; clear smooth boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0933. KSU lab 18.8% clay, 2.8% OM.
Bw1—76 to 89 centimeters (29.9 to 35.0 inches); very dark brown (10YR 2/2) exterior and very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) crushed silty clay; 42 percent clay; 1 percent dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) fine distinct irregular mottles; strong fine and medium angular blocky structure; firm, very sticky, very plastic; 1.0 fine roots throughout; fragments; noneffervescent; slightly alkaline, pH 7.6, pH meter; clear smooth boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0934. This horizon does not exhibit clay films on ped faces and we believe the clay increase is stratigraphic and not pedogenic. KSU lab 29.3% clay, 1.9% OM.
Bw2—89 to 102 centimeters (35.0 to 40.2 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) exterior silt loam; 20 percent clay; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; 1.0 fine roots throughout; fragments; noneffervescent; slightly alkaline, pH 7.7, pH meter; gradual smooth boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0935. KSU lab 21.9% clay, 1.0% OM.
C—102 to 165 centimeters (40.2 to 65.0 inches); brown (10YR 5/3) exterior very fine sandy loam; 4 percent clay; 5 percent strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) fine prominent irregular mottles; massive; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; 1.0 fine roots throughout; fragments; moderately alkaline, pH 7.9, pH meter. Lab sample # KSUSS0936. At 53 inches there is one strata that is discontinuous, 10YR 3/2, and silty clay loam in texture. KSU lab 8.4% clay, 0.6% OM.
