Ap1—0 to 13 centimeters (0.0 to 5.1 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) exterior, brown (10YR 5/3) exterior, dry; very fine sandy loam; 68 percent sand; 9 percent clay; weak fine granular structure; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; 3.0 fine roots throughout; fragments; very slight effervescence; moderately alkaline, pH 7.9, pH meter; abrupt smooth boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0937; observed in pit, small. KSU lab 8.6% clay, 1.4% OM
Ap2—13 to 33 centimeters (5.1 to 13.0 inches); dark brown (10YR 3/3) exterior, brown (10YR 5/3) exterior, dry; very fine sandy loam; 70 percent sand; 9 percent clay; weak medium and coarse granular structure; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; 1.0 medium roots throughout and 3.0 fine roots throughout; fragments; very slight effervescence; moderately alkaline, pH 8.0, pH meter; abrupt wavy boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0938. KSU lab 8.6% clay, 1.1% OM.
C1—33 to 43 centimeters (13.0 to 16.9 inches); 50 percent very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) exterior and 50 percent brown (10YR 4/3) exterior loam, stratified very fine sandy loam; 45 percent sand; 10 percent clay; 1 percent dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) fine distinct spherical mottles; massive; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; 1.0 fine roots throughout; fragments; very slight effervescence; moderately alkaline, pH 7.9, pH meter; abrupt smooth boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0939. The 0 to 17 inch layer appears to be very slightly calcareous overwash that was probably deposited in the 1951 flood. The upper 13 inches appears to have been mixed by tillage and is fairly uniform in color and texture. The 13 to 17 inch horizon was described as a C horizon because there is much stratification, strata are 1 to 3 mm thick and vary from 10YR 3/2 to 10YR 4/3, and vary also some in texture. KSU lab 9.5% clay, 1.6% OM.
A—43 to 61 centimeters (16.9 to 24.0 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) exterior loam; 41 percent sand; 13 percent clay; weak medium granular structure; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; 1.0 fine roots throughout; 5 percent fine cylindrical worm casts throughout; fragments; noneffervescent; slightly alkaline, pH 7.8, pH meter; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0940. KSU lab 12.6% clay, 1.6% OM.
Bwb1—61 to 76 centimeters (24.0 to 29.9 inches); 50 percent dark brown (10YR 3/3) exterior and 50 percent brown (10YR 5/3) exterior very fine sandy loam; 32 percent sand; 10 percent clay; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; 1.0 fine roots throughout; 5 percent fine cylindrical worm casts throughout; fragments; noneffervescent; moderately alkaline, pH 7.9, pH meter; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0941. KSU lab 10.0% clay, 1.2% OM.
C2—76 to 104 centimeters (29.9 to 40.9 inches); brown (10YR 5/3) exterior very fine sandy loam; 55 percent sand; 6 percent clay; 2 percent dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) fine distinct irregular mottles; massive; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; 1.0 fine roots throughout; 2.0 fine tubular pores; 5 percent fine cylindrical worm casts throughout; fragments; noneffervescent; moderately alkaline, pH 7.9, pH meter; clear smooth boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0942. KSU lab 5.9% clay.
C3—104 to 117 centimeters (40.9 to 46.1 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) exterior silt loam; 30 percent sand; 9 percent clay; massive; friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; 1.0 fine roots throughout; fragments; strong effervescence; moderately alkaline, pH 8.4, pH meter; clear smooth boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0943. Appears to be a more clayey discontinuous strata mixed in vfsl matrix almost like a series of clay balls. KSU lab 9.3% clay.
C4—117 to 147 centimeters (46.1 to 57.9 inches); grayish brown (10YR 5/2) exterior very fine sandy loam; 50 percent sand; 7 percent clay; massive; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; 1.0 fine roots throughout; 2 percent fine cylindrical worm casts throughout; fragments; strong effervescence; moderately alkaline, pH 8.4, pH meter; gradual smooth boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0944. KSU lab 6.7% clay.
C5—147 to 196 centimeters (57.9 to 77.2 inches); grayish brown (10YR 5/2) exterior very fine sandy loam; 70 percent sand; 5 percent clay; massive; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; 1.0 fine roots throughout; 1 percent fine spherical carbonate concretions throughout; fragments; strong effervescence; strongly alkaline, pH 8.5, pH meter; abrupt wavy boundary. Lab sample # KSUSS0945. KSU lab 4.7% clay.
Bwb2—196 to 234 centimeters (77.2 to 92.1 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1) exterior and very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) crushed silty clay loam; 5 percent sand; 32 percent clay; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; firm, moderately sticky, moderately plastic; 10 percent fine cylindrical noncoherent cemented carbonate threads between peds; fragments; strong effervescence; moderately alkaline, pH 8.2, pH meter.
