Ck1—373 to 391 centimeters (146.9 to 153.9 inches); light brownish gray (10YR 6/2), dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2), moist; sand; massive, and single grain; soft, very friable; fragments; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # 99P01197. loose; scattered white (10YR 9/2) pumice grains, mostly medium, coarse, and very coarse sand size, and few grains up to about 5mm diameter; scattered fine pebbles; some grains carbonate-coated; a few fine irregular cemented zones; mostly noncalcareous.
Ck2—391 to 401 centimeters (153.9 to 157.9 inches); very pale brown (10YR 8/2), light brownish gray (10YR 6/2), moist; sand; strong very coarse platy structure; extremely hard, very firm; fragments; strong effervescence; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # 99P01198. horizon consists mostly of cemented plates, 5 to 20 cm wide and up to 8 cm thick, with uncemented parts between the plates; scattered white (10YR 9/2) pumice grains, mostly medium, coarse and very coarse sand size, and a few grains up to about 5 mm diameter.
Ck3—401 to 409 centimeters (157.9 to 161.0 inches); very pale brown (10YR 8/2), light brownish gray (10YR 6/2), moist; fine sand; massive; soft, very friable; fragments; strong effervescence; abrupt wavy boundary. Lab sample # 99P01199. scattered white (10YR 9/2) pumice grains, mostly medium, coarse, and very coarse sand size, and a few grains up to about 5 mm diameter; very few hard parts; some grains carbonate-coated; a few fine weakly cemented parts.
Ck4—409 to 429 centimeters (161.0 to 168.9 inches); very pale brown (10YR 8/2), very pale brown (10YR 7/3), moist; loamy sand; massive; hard when dry, very firm; fragments; strong effervescence; abrupt wavy boundary. Lab sample # 99P01200. very hard; scattered white (10YR 9/2) pumice grains, mostly medium, coarse, and very coarse sand size, and a few grains up to about 5 mm diameter; breaks out as plates up to 8 cm diameter and 2-3 cm thick.
C1—429 to 434 centimeters (168.9 to 170.9 inches); very pale brown (10YR 7/4), yellowish brown (10YR 5/4), moist; gravelly sand; massive, and single grain; soft, very friable; fragments; abrupt smooth boundary. Lab sample # 99P01201. loose; scattered white (10YR 9/2) pumice grains, mostly medium, coarse, and very coarse sand size, and a few grains up to about 5 mm diameter; generally noncalcareous.
C2—434 to 475 centimeters (170.9 to 187.0 inches); light gray (10YR 7/2), grayish brown (10YR 5/2), moist; fine sand; massive; soft, very friable; fragments; abrupt wavy boundary. Lab sample # 99P01202. (fine earth); scattered white (10YR 9/2) pumice grains, mostly medium, coarse, and very coarse sand size, and a few grains up to about 5 mm diameter; noncalcareous.
C2—434 to 475 centimeters (170.9 to 187.0 inches); light gray (10YR 7/2), grayish brown (10YR 5/2), moist; massive; extremely hard, extremely firm*; fragments; strong effervescence; abrupt wavy boundary. Lab sample # 99P01203. (indurated parts); indurated material; indurated, elongated and rounded nodular forms that tend to be flattish, range from 3 to 10 cm across, 2 to 5 cm thick, and 5 to 25 cm long; in places, indurated plates, 1-5 cm thick, and 20 to 30 cm wide, form the top of the horizon; these plates and nodular forms occupy about 20% of the horizon.
C3—475 to 515 centimeters (187.0 to 202.8 inches); light gray (10YR 7/2), grayish brown (10YR 5/2), moist; fine sand; massive; soft, very friable; fragments; abrupt smooth boundary. Lab sample # 99P01204. scattered white (10YR 9/2) pumice grains, mostly medium, coarse, and very coarse sand size, and a few grains up to about 5 mm diameter; small amounts of carbonate and white noncalcareous salts occur as root channel linings 1-5 mm thick; noncalcareous except for calcareous part of some root channel linings.
C4—515 to 545 centimeters (202.8 to 214.6 inches); light gray (10YR 7/2), grayish brown (10YR 5/2), moist; fine sand; massive; soft, very friable; fragments. Lab sample # 99P01205. scattered white (10YR 9/2) pumice grains, mostly medium, coarse, and very coarse sand size, and a few grains up to about 5 mm diameter; small amounts of carbonate and white noncalcareous salts occur as root channel linings 1-5 mm thick, fewer than above; noncalcareous except for calcareous part of some root channel linings.
