    A—0 to 10 centimeters (0.0 to 3.9 inches); brown (7.5YR 5/3), brown (7.5YR 4/3), moist; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky parts to moderate very fine and fine granular structure; 3.0 fine roots throughout; fragments; strong effervescence; very strongly alkaline, pH 11.0, hellige-truog; clear smooth boundary. Lab sample # 98P02431; observed in trench. 14 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; 1.2 ds/m electrical conductivity; moderately alkaline; thin platy structure in upper 1 inch; 4 to 6 inches thick. The A horizon has color with hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 2 to 4. Texture is clay loam, silty clay loam, or silty clay with a silicate clay content of 25 to 35 percent. Some pedons have moist chroma less than 3.5, but the epipedon is not moist for 90 cumulative days in most years.
