A—0 to 20 centimeters (0.0 to 7.9 inches); brown (7.5YR 4/3), dark brown (7.5YR 3/3), moist; very gravelly loam; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky parts to moderate fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable; 21.0 very fine and fine roots; 50 percent by volume subrounded 2-39-75 millimeter basalt fragments; noneffervescent, by hcl, 1n; abrupt smooth boundary. Lab sample # 97P00365; observed in pit, small. slightly alkaline; 4 to 20 inches thick. The A horizon has color with hues of 5YR to 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 2 to 4. Texture of the fine earth fraction is loam, sandy clay loam, or clay loam. Clay content ranges from 20 to 35 percent. Calcium carbonate equivalent of the fine earth fraction is less that 15 percent. Some pedons have thin coatings of lime on rock fragments.
R—20 to 30 centimeters (7.9 to 11.8 inches); gray (10YR 5/1), dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2), moist; bedrock; fragments; noneffervescent, by hcl, 1n.; observed in pit, small. The R horizon is unweathered basalt bedrock. The unweathered bedrock is coarsely fractured with lime coatings that are strongly cemented to indurated in the vertical fractures in some pedons.
