Ap—0 to 15 centimeters (0.0 to 5.9 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) clay; strong fine and medium granular, and weak medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; firm; fragments; abrupt boundary. Lab sample # 00P03073. many fine interstitial pores between the granular peds and common fine tubular pores in subangular blocky peds; few very fine and few fine roots (current year soybean plants) between peds and in desiccation cracks; many trans-horizon desiccation cracks 1 to 5 cm wide that extends through horizon (observed from surface).
A—15 to 29 centimeters (5.9 to 11.4 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1) clay; strong very thick platy parts to strong fine and medium angular blocky structure; extremely firm; 0.5 very fine and fine roots throughout; 0.5 very fine tubular pores; fragments; clear boundary. Lab sample # 00P03074. roots between plates and in desiccation cracks; common trans-horizon desiccation cracks 1 to 4 cm wide extending through horizon (observed from surface); few fine and medium prominent irregular shaped dark brown (7.5YR 3/4) masses of iron accumulation with sharp boundaries in matrix and between some plates; few fine black (10YR 2/1) manganese nodules with sharp boundaries in matrix.
Bssg1—29 to 95 centimeters (11.4 to 37.4 inches); dark gray (10YR 4/1) clay; moderate medium and coarse prismatic parts to moderate medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; firm; 0.5 very fine roots throughout and 0.5 fine roots throughout; 0.5 fine tubular pores; fragments; gradual boundary. Lab sample # 00P03075. roots between prisms, in desiccation cracks and on slickenside faces; common trans-horizon desiccation cracks 1 to 4 cm wide and extending through horizon (observed from surface); common slickensides, dip of slickensides typically 45-60 degrees from the horizontal; slickenside surfaces are polished and grooved and have shiny very dark gray (10YR 3/1) clay accumulations 1-3 mm thick on faces; common fine and few medium prominent irregular shaped brown (7.5YR 4/4) and few medium prominent irregular shaped reddish brown (5YR 4/4) masses of iron accumulations with diffuse boundaries in matrix; few fine black (10YR 2/1) manganese nodules with sharp boundaries in matrix. Split at 62 cm 00P3076.
