    O2—0 to 2 centimeters (0.0 to 0.8 inches); very dark brown (10YR 2/2) coarse sand, partially decomposed organic matter; fragments; diffuse boundary. Lab sample # 40A31493. some sand grains in organic matter; no plant structures are evident in the mass; moist color speckled with light colored grains of coarse sand.
    A1—2 to 7 centimeters (0.8 to 2.8 inches); brown (10YR 5/3) and dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) and brown (10YR 4/3) oxidized, pale brown (10YR 6/3) and very pale brown (10YR 7/3), dry; fine sandy loam; weak fine granular structure; fragments; diffuse boundary. Lab sample # 40A31494. nearly loose; the horizon contains a few small angular ironstone fragments.
    A2—7 to 17 centimeters (2.8 to 6.7 inches); brown (10YR 5/3) and strong brown (7.5YR 5/6), light gray (10YR 7/2), dry; fine sandy loam; weak fine granular structure; fragments. Lab sample # 40A31495. nearly loose; cores and small round pockets of very dark grayish brown (7.5YR 5/6) material are common in the upper part of horizon, and few pockets of olive (5YR 5/6) material are present in the lower part; horizon contains numerous small angular ironstone fragments approximately 10 mm on the long axis; lower boundary is distinct.
    B21t—17 to 40 centimeters (6.7 to 15.7 inches); red (2.5YR 4/8), red (2.5YR 4/6), dry; clay; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, very plastic; fragments; diffuse boundary. Lab sample # 40A31496. small ironstone fragments are common, especially in upper part; moist red soil is slightly lighter crushed.
    B22t—40 to 58 centimeters (15.7 to 22.8 inches); red (2.5YR 4/6) and pale olive (5Y 6/3) clay; red (2.5YR 4/6) fine distinct and pale olive (5Y 6/3) coarse faint mottles; subangular blocky, and moderate fine granular structure; firm, very plastic; fragments; diffuse boundary. Lab sample # 40A31497. many blocks have glossy or slick surfaces; color of soil when dry is the same as that when moist.
    B23t—58 to 83 centimeters (22.8 to 32.7 inches); pale yellow (5Y 7/3) and red (2.5YR 4/8) and yellowish red (5YR 5/6) clay; moderate medium subangular blocky parts to weak fine granular structure; firm, very plastic; fragments; diffuse boundary. Lab sample # 40A31498. structure is less distinct than that of the overlying horizon; some blocks have glossy or slick surfaces; the brown colors are dominant in the upper part of the horizon, whereas the yellow is dominant in the lower part; colors of the dry and moist soil are the same.
    B3—83 to 124 centimeters (32.7 to 48.8 inches); light gray (5Y 7/2) and red (2.5YR 4/8) and red (2.5YR 5/6) clay; 25 percent red (2.5YR 4/8) fine prominent and 25 percent red (2.5YR 5/6) fine prominent mottles; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; firm, very plastic; fragments. Lab sample # 40A31499. in places the horizon has a speckled appearance; colors do not change as the soil becomes dry; there are some medium and coarse mottles.
    C—124 to 167 centimeters (48.8 to 65.7 inches); pale yellow (5Y 7/3) and red (2.5YR 4/8) clay; 10 percent red (2.5YR 4/8) fine prominent mottles; moderate medium and coarse platy structure; firm, very plastic; fragments. Lab sample # 40A31500. the structure is due to the laminated beds of clay, apparently inherited; midway in the horizon there is a band, about 2 inches thick, in which mottlings are numerous as compared to parts above and below it.
