AP—0 to 15 centimeters (0.0 to 5.9 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1), dark gray (10YR 4/1), dry; silty clay; hard when dry, firm, moderately sticky, moderately plastic; fragments; strongly alkaline, pH 8.6, unspecified; abrupt boundary. Lab sample # 40A24184. This layer is light weight and appears to be high in organic matter and breaks into medium subangular blocky units. This layer has considerable visible salt and a thin layer covers the surface in places. Saltgrass roots are very numerous in this horizon.
A12—15 to 53 centimeters (5.9 to 20.9 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1), dark gray (10YR 4/1), dry; clay; moderate medium prismatic structure; very hard, very sticky, very plastic; fragments; strongly alkaline, pH 8.9, unspecified; abrupt boundary. Lab sample # 40A24185. This layer has about 10 percent of the surface area occupied by hard light brownish gray (10YR 6/2, grayish brown 10YR 5/2 moist) lime concretions about 1/8 inch across. When dry this layer has cracks about 1 inch wide every 4 to 8 inches.
C2—53 to 91 centimeters (20.9 to 35.8 inches);, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2), dry; silt loam; loose, friable, slightly plastic; fragments; noneffervescent; moderately alkaline, pH 8.2, unspecified. Lab sample # 40A24186. It has some mice and is noncalcareous.
B2—53 to 91 centimeters (20.9 to 35.8 inches); black (10YR 2/1), very dark gray (10YR 3/1), dry; clay; weak very coarse prismatic structure; extremely hard, moderately sticky, very plastic; fragments; strongly alkaline, pH 8.9, unspecified irregular boundary. Lab sample # 40A24186. The prisms have very shiny polished sides like slickensides. This layer has clay flows around the structural aggregates, and about 8 percent of the surface area is occupied by very hard. When dry this layer has wide cracks about 8 inches apart.
B3—91 to 112 centimeters (35.8 to 44.1 inches); very dark grayish brown (2.5Y 3/2), grayish brown (10YR 5/2), dry; silty clay loam; strong medium angular blocky structure; moderately plastic; carbonate concretions; fragments; strongly alkaline, pH 9.0, unspecified. Lab sample # 40A24187. All aggregates are colloidal coated. This layer is not nearly as hard as layer above and is less plastic. It has a pH of 9.0 and roots are quite numerous from the surface to the bottom of this layer. It has some lime concretions and considerable material from layer above that occurs as mottles.
C1—112 to 152 centimeters (44.1 to 59.8 inches); dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2), light brownish gray (10YR 6/2), dry; silty clay loam; weak medium angular blocky structure; friable, moderately plastic; fragments; slight effervescence; moderately alkaline, pH 8.4, unspecified. Lab sample # 40A24188
