A1—0 to 18 centimeters (0.0 to 7.1 inches); black (N 2/0) silty clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky parts to moderate and strong very fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm; fragments; strongly acid, pH 5.3, hellige-truog. Lab sample # 40A12013. There is high concentration of roots in this horizon which varies from 5 to 10 inches in thickness. Its lower horizon boundary is gradual.
A3g—18 to 23 centimeters (7.1 to 9.1 inches); very dark gray (N 3/0) and dark gray (N 4/0) silty clay loam; weak medium subangular blocky parts to moderate fine granular structure; slightly hard, firm; fragments; slightly acid, pH 6.5, hellige-truog. Lab sample # 40A12014. This is a transitional horizon that varies in thickness from one to four inches. Its lower boundary is clear and wavy.
Cg1—23 to 51 centimeters (9.1 to 20.1 inches); olive gray (5Y 5/2) silty clay loam; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, moderately sticky; fragments; slightly alkaline, pH 7.5, hellige-truog. Lab sample # 40A12015
Cg2—51 to 152 centimeters (20.1 to 59.8 inches); light olive gray (5Y 6/2) silty clay loam; moderate medium prismatic parts to massive; hard, moderately sticky; fragments; strongly alkaline, pH 8.5, hellige-truog. Lab sample # 40A12016. When sampled, ground water entered the pit at about 30 inches (through a root channel) and rose to within 22 inches of the surface. A few roots were present in this horizon. No investigations was made beyond 60 inches
