Thin mat of undecomposed and partially decomposed organic materials. The surface one-fourth inch consists almost entirely of last year's fall of pine needles; the horizon rests abruptly on the horizon below.
A1—3 to 7 centimeters (1.2 to 2.8 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2), grayish brown (10YR 5/2), dry; loam; black (10YR 2/1) and dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) mottles; weak and moderate medium and coarse granular structure; soft, very friable; fragments; clear smooth boundary. Lab sample # 40A30014. The color of this horizon is not uniform and contains streaks.
A2—7 to 17 centimeters (2.8 to 6.7 inches); brown (10YR 5/3), very pale brown (10YR 7/3), dry; loam; weak coarse subangular blocky parts to weak and moderate medium and coarse granular structure; soft, very friable; fragments; gradual wavy boundary. Lab sample # 40A30015
B1—17 to 23 centimeters (6.7 to 9.1 inches); brown (10YR 4/3), pale brown (10YR 6/3), dry; clay loam; weak and moderate fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable; light gray (10YR 7/2) coats on horizontal faces of peds; fragments; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # 40A30016. This horizon has thin nearly continuous tonhautchen.
B21—23 to 41 centimeters (9.1 to 16.1 inches); brown (7.5YR 4/4), light brown (7.5YR 6/4), dry; clay loam; moderate and strong fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm; light gray (10YR 7/2) coats on faces of peds; fragments; clear smooth boundary. Lab sample # 40A30017
B22—41 to 61 centimeters (16.1 to 24.0 inches); brown (7.5YR 4/4), brown (7.5YR 5/4), dry; clay loam; moderate coarse prismatic parts to strong medium angular blocky structure; very hard, firm; light gray (10YR 7/2) coats on vertical faces of peds; fragments; gradual smooth boundary. Lab sample # 40A30018
B3—61 to 72 centimeters (24.0 to 28.3 inches); brown (7.5YR 4/4), brown (7.5YR 5/4), dry; gravelly clay loam; weak medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; hard, friable; 15 percent by volume 75-162-250 millimeter unspecified fragments and 15 percent by volume 2-39-75 millimeter unspecified fragments; gradual smooth boundary. Lab sample # 40A30019
D—72 to 94 centimeters (28.3 to 37.0 inches); brown (10YR 4/3), pale brown (10YR 6/3), dry; sandy loam; massive; soft, firm; 35 percent by volume 2-39-75 millimeter unspecified fragments and 35 percent by volume 75-162-250 millimeter unspecified fragments. Lab sample # 40A30020. The horizon appears to be weakly cemented.
