Ap—0 to 23 centimeters (0.0 to 9.1 inches); brown (10YR 4/3) sandy loam; weak and moderate fine and medium granular structure; very friable; 4 percent by volume nonflat subangular very strongly coherent cemented 2-39-75 millimeter mixed fragments. Lab sample # 40A03472. Particle sizes seem to be principally very fine sand, find sand or silt and the upper two horizons may have a substantial aeolian component. Common earthworms and night-crawlers are present, with some night-crawlers exposed in the upper B horizon. Contains less than 5 percent coarse skeleton.
Bw1—23 to 41 centimeters (9.1 to 16.1 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) very fine sandy loam; weak coarse subangular blocky parts to weak fine granular structure; very friable; 0.5 fine pores; 5 percent by volume nonflat subangular very strongly coherent cemented 2-39-75 millimeter mixed fragments. Lab sample # 40A03473. Particle sizes are in about the same range as in the horizon above when dug out; unglazed pores occur on the interior of the subangular blocks. This horizon is variable in depth; on about half the sides of the soil pit it was only 2-3 inches thick. Contains 5 percent coarse skeleton.
Bw2—41 to 53 centimeters (16.1 to 20.9 inches); light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) gravelly fine sandy loam; weak coarse parts to medium subangular blocky structure; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; 0.5 pores; 15 percent by volume nonflat subangular very strongly coherent cemented 2-39-75 millimeter mixed fragments. Lab sample # 40A03474. Contains 10-20 percent coarse skeleton in the 1-3 inch diameter range. Pores are unglazed.
2Bw3—53 to 76 centimeters (20.9 to 29.9 inches); light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) gravelly fine sandy loam; weak coarse platy parts to weak coarse subangular blocky structure; friable; brittle; 3.0 pores; 15 percent by volume nonflat subangular very strongly coherent cemented 2-39-75 millimeter mixed fragments. Lab sample # 40A03475. Contains 10-20 percent coarse skeleton; pores are glazed and coarse.
2Cd1—76 to 107 centimeters (29.9 to 42.1 inches); light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) exterior and olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) interior gravelly fine sandy loam; weak medium platy structure; firm, nonsticky, nonplastic; brittle; 0.5 pores; 30 percent by volume nonflat subangular very strongly coherent cemented 2-39-75 millimeter mixed fragments. Lab sample # 40A03476. Contains 20-40 percent subrounded coarse skeleton mostly in the 1-3 inch diameter range; glazed pores on channels visible on the plate edges but hardly visible on the plate surfaces or interiors. Surface of plates (2.5Y 4/4) interiors are (2.5Y 5/4). The material in place resists removal with a shovel principally because the shovel blade cuts through coarse skeleton.
2Cd2—107 to 127 centimeters (42.1 to 50.0 inches); light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) exterior and olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) interior gravelly fine sandy loam; 30 percent by volume nonflat subangular very strongly coherent cemented 2-39-75 millimeter mixed fragments. Lab sample # 40A03477. Like the above but deeper.
