A1—0 to 15 centimeters (0.0 to 5.9 inches); brown (7.5YR 4/2), dark brown (7.5YR 3/2), moist; fine sandy loam; weak fine granular structure; hard when dry, friable; 1 percent iron concretions; fragments; neutral, pH 7.0, unspecified; gradual boundary. Lab sample # 40A23699. Very little digestion with H2O2. This layer has a few hard iron concretions about the size of peas and gradually grades into layer below.
A12—15 to 30 centimeters (5.9 to 11.8 inches); brown (7.5YR 4/4), dark brown (7.5YR 3/3), moist; fine sandy loam; weak fine granular, and massive; hard when dry, friable, slightly sticky; 21 percent iron concretions; fragments; neutral, pH 6.8, unspecified. Lab sample # 40A23700. With very little digestion with H2O2. This horizon has more iron concretions than the layer above and they are about as hard. They consists of about the same texture as the surrounding soil but are redder in color, especially when west (5YR 4/4).
A21—30 to 46 centimeters (11.8 to 18.1 inches); brown (7.5YR 5/4), brown (7.5YR 4/4), moist; fine sandy loam; massive; friable, slightly plastic; iron concretions; fragments; neutral, pH 6.6, unspecified. Lab sample # 40A23701. No reaction with H2O2. This is the zone of maximum iron concretion accumulation. Probably nearly 50 percent of the mass consists of hard concretion accumulation. Probably nearly 50 percent of the mass consists of hard concretion ranging from pin head size to 1 inch in diameter.
A22—46 to 61 centimeters (18.1 to 24.0 inches); light brown (7.5YR 6/4), brown (7.5YR 4/4), moist; loamy fine sand; massive; nonsticky, nonplastic; fragments; neutral, pH 6.6, unspecified; abrupt boundary. Lab sample # 40A23702
B1—61 to 76 centimeters (24.0 to 29.9 inches); light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4), strong brown (7.5YR 5/6), moist; fine sandy loam; massive, and fine subangular blocky; friable, slightly plastic; iron concretions; fragments; slightly acid, pH 6.5, unspecified. Lab sample # 40A23703. Less concretions than layer above and they are not quite so hard.
B21—76 to 91 centimeters (29.9 to 35.8 inches); reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/6), strong brown (7.5YR 5/6), moist; sandy clay loam; weak medium subangular blocky, and prismatic structure; moderately plastic; fragments; slightly acid, pH 6.4, unspecified. Lab sample # 40A23704. This horizon has very few concretions and they are fairly soft.
B22—91 to 114 centimeters (35.8 to 44.9 inches); strong brown (7.5YR 5/6), yellowish red (5YR 5/6), moist; sandy clay loam; prismatic structure; moderately sticky, moderately plastic; fragments; slightly acid, pH 6.2, unspecified. Lab sample # 40A23705
B3—114 to 140 centimeters (44.9 to 55.1 inches); clay loam; moderately plastic; fragments; slightly acid, pH 6.2, unspecified; abrupt boundary. Lab sample # 40A23706. The gray layer is the most plastic and finest textured. It appears to swell and contract more than the adjacent red and brown material.
B'2M—140 to 140 centimeters (55.1 to 55.1 inches); prismatic structure; fragments. Lab sample # 40A23707. Reticulate mottled iron hardpan with large prismatic structure. Shows evidence of root penetration at one time with roots 6 to 12 inches in diameter.
