Ao—0 to 1 centimeters (0.0 to 0.4 inches);, very dark gray (10YR 3/1), dry; fragments; noneffervescent; neutral, pH 7.0, bromthymol blue; abrupt broken boundary. Lab sample # 40A08186. 0 to 1/2 inch thick. The Ao (and Aoo) is only under the larger big sagebrush; it does not extend into the barren and grassed spots between the sagebrush. There is some reddish-brown moss on the A1 under the sagebrush. Elsewhere, some greenish and yellowish-orange lichen or algae is on the A1. The surface has an uneven microrelief of 0.2 to 0.7 inch.
A1—1 to 4 centimeters (0.4 to 1.6 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2), grayish brown (10YR 5/2), dry; silt loam; very thick platy parts to weak very thin platy parts to weak very fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable, very sticky, slightly plastic; 21.0 roots; fragments; neutral, pH 6.7, bromthymol blue; abrupt wavy boundary. Lab sample # 40A08187; moist when described;. top 0.1 inch has a very fragile crust when dry.

Lab sample # 40A08188; moist when described;. Sample is somewhat mixed with A1 because of the filled cracks. In one side of pit where B2 is less developed, this horizon is not so distinct nor so gray.
AB—11 to 15 centimeters (4.3 to 5.9 inches); dark brown (10YR 3/3), grayish brown (10YR 5/2), dry; silt loam; moderate thin platy parts to moderate very fine and fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable, moderately sticky, moderately plastic; 21.0 roots; clay films on horizontal faces of peds; fragments; noneffervescent; neutral, pH 7.0, bromthymol blue; abrupt wavy boundary. Lab sample # 40A08189; moist when described;. patchy - phpvsfiid 189225; patchy - phpvsfiid 189225
