Aoo—0 to 2 centimeters (0.0 to 0.8 inches); fragments. Lab sample # 40A21230. Loose pine and oak leaves.
Ao—2 to 3 centimeters (0.8 to 1.2 inches); black (10YR 2/1); 21.0 fine roots; fragments. Lab sample # 40A21231. partially decomposed leaves, twigs, and roots. Living roots bind this layer into a mat.
A1—3 to 6 centimeters (1.2 to 2.4 inches); dark gray (10YR 4/1), light gray (10YR 7/2), dry; loam; weak fine and medium granular structure; friable; fragments; clear boundary. Lab sample # 40A21232. estimated 15 percent angular sandstone and chert fragments greater than 3/4 inch in diameter.
A21—6 to 13 centimeters (2.4 to 5.1 inches); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2), very pale brown (10YR 7/3) and light brownish gray (10YR 6/2), dry; loam; weak fine and medium granular structure; friable, nonsticky; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 5.0, bromcresol green; clear boundary. Lab sample # 40A21233. estimated 15 percent angular sandstone and chert fragments greater than 3/4 inch in diameter.
A22—13 to 31 centimeters (5.1 to 12.2 inches); brown (10YR 5/3), very pale brown (10YR 7/3), dry; loam; weak fine and medium granular structure; friable, nonsticky; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 5.0, bromcresol green; gradual boundary. Lab sample # 40A21234. estimated 15 percent sandstone rock fragments greater than 3/4 inch in diameter.
A23—31 to 49 centimeters (12.2 to 19.3 inches); brown (10YR 5/3), very pale brown (10YR 7/3), dry; loam; friable; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.8, bromcresol green; clear boundary. Lab sample # 40A21235. no evident aggregation in moist condition; estimated that sandstone rock fragments between 3/4 inch and 18 inches comprise 50 to 60 percent of horizon.
B11—49 to 69 centimeters (19.3 to 27.2 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) loam; reddish brown (5YR 4/4) fine and yellowish red (5YR 4/6) mottles; friable, slightly sticky; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.6, bromcresol green; gradual boundary. Lab sample # 40A21236. no evident aggregation when moist; mottles appear to be clay films lining tubular pores and on sand particles; estimated sandstone fragments between 3/4 inch and 18 inches comprise 50 to 60 percent of horizon.
B12—69 to 97 centimeters (27.2 to 38.2 inches); very pale brown (10YR 7/4) loam; weak medium and coarse angular blocky structure; firm; reddish brown (5YR 4/4) clay films; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.6, bromcresol green; clear boundary. Lab sample # 40A21237. sandstone fragments between 3/4 inch and 18 inches estimated to comprise 70 percent of horizon.; continuous - phpvsfiid 176773; continuous - phpvsfiid 176773
B21—97 to 135 centimeters (38.2 to 53.1 inches); loam, sandy loam; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.6, bromcresol green; clear boundary. Lab sample # 40A21238. Sandstone fragments up to 18 inches diameter comprise about 85 percent of this horizon. The sandstone fragments have yellowish red (5YR 4/8) interior color with a red (2.5YR 4/8) rind. Earthy material between rock fragments is reddish brown (5YR 5/4) clay loam; this horizon contained a pocket about 8 inches in diameter of yellowish red (5YR 4/6) silty clay which was sampled separately (Lincoln Lab. No. 12112, now 40A21241). Pore surfaces in the silty clay pocket were lined with 5YR 5/4 clay films.
B2u—135 to 150 centimeters (53.1 to 59.1 inches); silty clay; yellowish red (5YR 4/6) and light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) and red (2.5YR 4/8) mottles; fragments. Lab sample # 40A21239. chert fragments are more angular and smaller than the sandstone fragments in horizons above and below.
B23—150 to 160 centimeters (59.1 to 63.0 inches); loam, sandy loam; fragments. Lab sample # 40A21240. Sandstone fragments up to 18 in diameter comprise about 85 percent of this horizon. The sandstone fragments have yellowish red (5YR 4/8) interior color with a red (2.5YR 4/8) rind. Earthy material between rock fragments is reddish brown (5YR 5/4) clay loam. Not sampled.
