    O1—0 to 3 centimeters (0.0 to 1.2 inches); fragments; abrupt smooth boundary. Lab sample # 40A02177. Not sampled; litter of Hemlock with some leaves of sugar maple and American beech. The topmost 1/4 inch appears relatively fresh. The lower 3/4 inch is a fermentation zone filled with fungi and fine roots in older litter whose vegetative form is still identifiable.
    O2—3 to 8 centimeters (1.2 to 3.1 inches); black (10YR 2/1); weak very fine granular parts to medium subangular blocky structure; 21.0 fine roots; fragments; extremely acid, pH 3.8, bromcresol green; abrupt wavy boundary. Lab sample # 40A02178. Organic material held in a network of fine and medium roots; includes 1/2 inch units that break into medium block-like fragments; no apparent clean sand grains; filled with 1 inch animal burrows.
    A1—8 to 11 centimeters (3.1 to 4.3 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) and dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) silt loam; massive; very friable; 21.0 fine roots; 3.0 fine pores; fragments; extremely acid, pH 4.0, bromcresol green; abrupt wavy boundary. Lab sample # 40A02179. Common clean white sand grains on broken faces.
    B21—11 to 16 centimeters (4.3 to 6.3 inches); dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) and brown (7.5YR 4/4) silt loam; weak very fine granular structure; very friable; 21.0 fine and medium roots and 21.0 coarse roots; 21.0 pores; fragments; extremely acid, pH 4.4, bromcresol green; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # 40A02180. Breaks into slightly coherent irregular fragments without distinct pressure faces; less fine roots than horizon above.
    B22—16 to 26 centimeters (6.3 to 10.2 inches); brown (7.5YR 4/2) silt loam; weak very fine granular structure; very friable; 21.0 fine and medium roots; 3.0 fine tubular pores; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.6, bromcresol green; gradual wavy boundary. Lab sample # 40A02181. Crumbles to irregular medium and fine fragments without pressure faces;
    B3—26 to 41 centimeters (10.2 to 16.1 inches); brown (10YR 4/3) silt loam; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; 3.0 fine roots; 3.0 fine tubular pores; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.8, bromcresol green; abrupt wavy boundary. Lab sample # 40A02182. Block-like aggregates have about 25 percent discontinuous pressure faces without cutans; smooth pore interiors without cutans.
    A'2—41 to 51 centimeters (16.1 to 20.1 inches); grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) silt loam; 3 percent brown (10YR 5/3) medium and 3 percent yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) medium mottles; massive; firm; brittle; 0.5 fine roots; 0.5 fine tubular pores; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 5.0, bromcresol green. Lab sample # 40A02183. Not sampled; smooth pore interiors but without cutans; this is in the silty surficial material mantle and rests on a fragipan in shaly till.
