Ap—0 to 18 centimeters (0.0 to 7.1 inches); brown (10YR 4/3) crushed and dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) broken face silt loam; moderate fine and medium granular structure; very friable; 21.0 fine roots; 1 percent by volume 75-162-250 millimeter unspecified fragments; very strongly acid, pH 5.0, unspecified; abrupt smooth boundary. Lab sample # 40A02091. Silt loam contains few shale fragments and occasional channers. Note brown color reflecting dominance of an originally spodic horizon, remnants of which having 10YR 3/3-4/4 colors can be found in spots in vicinity of the pit.
B21—18 to 30 centimeters (7.1 to 11.8 inches); brown (7.5YR 5/4) crushed and brown (7.5YR 4/4) broken face silt loam; weak fine and medium subangular blocky, and weak very fine and fine granular structure; very friable; 21.0 fine roots; 3.0 fine tubular pores; 1 percent by volume 75-162-250 millimeter unspecified fragments; strongly acid, pH 5.1, unspecified; gradual wavy boundary. Lab sample # 40A02092. Silt loam contains few channers; blocks not evident in place but with distinct though discontinuous pressure faces when broken; pores may be root impressions and have smooth interiors but no cutans.
B22—30 to 53 centimeters (11.8 to 20.9 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) crushed silt loam; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; 21.0 fine roots; 3.0 fine tubular pores; 1 percent by volume 75-162-250 millimeter unspecified fragments; strongly acid, pH 5.2, unspecified; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # 40A02093. Silt loam contains few shale fragments and few channers; blocks are not evident in place but have discontinuous pressure faces when removed; pores have smooth interiors but no cutans.
B3—53 to 66 centimeters (20.9 to 26.0 inches); brown (10YR 4/3) crushed and olive brown (2.5Y 4/3) broken face silt loam; weak medium subangular blocky, and massive, and weak very fine granular; friable; brittle; 3.0 fine roots; 3.0 fine tubular pores; 2 percent by volume 75-162-250 millimeter unspecified fragments; strongly acid, pH 5.2, unspecified; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # 40A02094. Peds not apparent in face of pit but material breaks to irregular block like pieces that have few discontinuous pressure faces. Silt loam contains a moderate number of shale fragments and channers.
IIBx—66 to 76 centimeters (26.0 to 29.9 inches); grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) crushed and dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) broken face channery loam; 3 percent light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) fine mottles; very firm; brittle; 20 percent by volume 75-162-250 millimeter unspecified fragments. Lab sample # 40A02095. Not sampled; few weakly expressed small discontinuous cleavage planes with smooth interiors and apparently silty linings but no clay skins; broken faces leave clean protruding sand grains.
