A—0 to 8 centimeters (0.0 to 3.1 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1), gray (7.5YR 5/1), dry; sand; weak medium granular structure; very friable; 0.5 medium and coarse roots and 3.0 fine roots; fragments; noneffervescent, by hcl, 1n; very strongly acid, pH 4.9, pH meter; abrupt wavy boundary. Lab sample # 97P00915. The A horizon has a hue of 10YR or is neutral; value of 2 or 3, and chroma of 0 to 3. Some pedons have an Ap horizon. It has the same colors and texture as the A horizon. Reaction is very strongly acid.
E—8 to 23 centimeters (3.1 to 9.1 inches); 70 percent brown (7.5YR 5/2) and 30 percent brown (7.5YR 4/2), light gray (7.5YR 7/1), dry; sand; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; 0.5 medium and coarse roots and 3.0 fine roots; fragments; noneffervescent, by hcl, 1n; very strongly acid, pH 4.7, pH meter; abrupt wavy boundary. Lab sample # 97P00916. The E horizon has a hue of 10YR, 7.5YR or 5YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 1 or 2. Reaction is very strongly acid to moderately acid.
Bhs—23 to 28 centimeters (9.1 to 11.0 inches); dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) sand; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; 0.5 medium and coarse roots and 3.0 fine roots; fragments; noneffervescent, by hcl, 1n; very strongly acid, pH 4.8, pH meter; abrupt irregular boundary. Lab sample # 97P00917. The Bhs horizon has a hue of 5YR, value of 2 or 3, and chroma of 2 or 3. Reaction is very strongly acid to moderately acid.
Bs1—28 to 41 centimeters (11.0 to 16.1 inches); brown (7.5YR 4/4) sand; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; 3.0 fine roots; fragments; noneffervescent, by hcl, 1n; strongly acid, pH 5.2, pH meter; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # 97P00918. Single column of very weakly cemented, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) ortstein about 4 inches wide extends into the Bs2 horizon; ortstein occupies 10 percent of the horizon. The Bs horizon has a hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 4 to 6. The amount of Ortstein occurring s columns or tongues ranges from 0 to 30 percent. Reaction is strongly acid to slightly acid.
Bs2—41 to 53 centimeters (16.1 to 20.9 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) sand; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; 3.0 fine roots; fragments; noneffervescent, by hcl, 1n; strongly acid, pH 5.2, pH meter; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # 97P00919. Single column of very weakly cemented, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) ortstein about 4 inches wide extends from the Bs1 through this horizon into the upper part of the C1 horizon; ortstein occupies 10 percent of the horizon. The Bs horizon has a hue of 10YR or &.5YR, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 4 to 6. The amount of ortstein occurring as columns or tongues ranges from 0 to 30 percent. Reaction is strongly acid to slightly acid.
C1—53 to 178 centimeters (20.9 to 70.1 inches); light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) sand; structureless single grain; loose; 0.5 fine roots; fragments; noneffervescent, by hcl, 1n; moderately acid, pH 5.6, pH meter; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # 97P00920. single column of very weakly cemented, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) ortstein about 4 inches wide extends from the Bs2 into the C1 horizon to a depth of 37 inches; ortstein occupies 10 percent of that portion of the horizon. The C horizon has a hue of 10YR, value of 6 or 7, and chroma of 3 to 6. Some pedons have a BC horizon with a hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 4 to 6, and chroma of 6 or 7. Reaction in the C horizon ranges from strongly acid to slightly acid.
C2—178 to 244 centimeters (70.1 to 96.1 inches); very pale brown (10YR 7/4) sand; structureless single grain; loose; fragments; noneffervescent, by hcl, 1n; moderately acid, pH 5.8, pH indicator solutions.
