Ap—0 to 20 centimeters (0.0 to 7.9 inches); brown (10YR 4/3) silt loam; very fine subangular blocky, and moderate granular structure; friable; fragments; neutral, pH 6.8, pH meter; abrupt boundary. Lab sample # OSU0007925; observed in pit, small. -Structure is described as moderate granular or very fine subangular blocky. -"Lower boundary abrupt"
BE—20 to 25 centimeters (7.9 to 9.8 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) silt loam; moderate very fine subangular blocky structure; friable; clay films on all faces of peds; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.9, pH meter; gradual boundary. Lab sample # OSU0007926; observed in pit, small. -Matrix color described as 10YR 4/4-5/6 -Lower boundary weak and gradual -Occasional thin patchy clay skins on ped faces This horizon likely qualifies as the top of the argillic horizon by clay increase from lab data and clay films observed. However, it was designated B1 on the description, so we will keep that designation but update to BE.
Bt1—25 to 33 centimeters (9.8 to 13.0 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) silt loam; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; friable; clay films on all faces of peds; fragments; extremely acid, pH 4.4, pH meter; clear boundary. Lab sample # OSU0007927; observed in pit, small. -Matrix color 10YR 5/4-4/4 -"Moderately friable" -"Lower boundary clear" -"Very thin patchy discontinuous clay skins common on the faces of smaller peds" Horizon designation updated from B21 to Bt2.
Bt2—33 to 43 centimeters (13.0 to 16.9 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) silty clay loam; 2 percent yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) faint mottles; moderate fine subangular blocky, and moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable; clay films on all faces of peds; 1 percent distinct light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4), moist, masses of oxidized iron in matrix; 8 percent by volume flat subrounded weakly coherent cemented 2-75-150 millimeter sandstone, unspecified fragments observed by visual inspection method; extremely acid, pH 4.4, pH meter; clear boundary. Lab sample # OSU0007928; observed in pit, small. -Coarse silty clay loam -Matrix 10YR 4/4-5/6, exterior 10YR 5/4 (lithochromic mottles?) -10YR 6/4 mottling assumed to be redox concentrations, "increases in quantity in lower part" -Structure is weak to moderate -Lower boundary clear -Some patchy clay skins evident on some of the faces while somewhat porous or vesicular surfaces are common -Occasional fragment of weathered fine grained sandstone present
2Bt3—43 to 53 centimeters (16.9 to 20.9 inches); light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) silty clay loam; weak fine prismatic parts to weak fine subangular blocky structure; firm; distinct light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2), moist, silt coats on all faces of peds; reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/8), moist, masses of oxidized iron and light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2), moist, iron depletions on vertical faces of peds; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.6, pH meter; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # OSU0007929; observed in pit, small. Horizon designated as IIB23g A2?.; -Description designates horizon as IIB23gA2', the "g" for gley does not make sense as the gray color is on the ped faces, assuming the A2' stands for the fact silt coats, not clay films are described-more in line with an E horizon? -The gray ped coatings are "silty and vesicular" -Lower boundary clear
2Bt4—53 to 69 centimeters (20.9 to 27.2 inches); reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/6) clay loam; weak coarse prismatic, and weak medium prismatic structure; firm; 43 percent prominent gray (10YR 5/1), moist, clay films on all faces of peds; faint brownish yellow (10YR 6/6), moist, masses of oxidized iron in matrix and prominent gray (10YR 5/1), moist, iron depletions in matrix; 12 percent by volume nonflat subangular strongly coherent cemented 2-10-15 millimeter coal fragments observed by visual inspection method; very strongly acid, pH 4.5, pH meter; clear boundary. Lab sample # OSU0007930; observed in pit, small. This horizon is erratic. At the section sampled it was 6? thick, but in other places it is missing entirely.; -The only matrix color with Munsell designation was 7.5YR 6/6, others were brownish yellow and gray which were assumed to be redox features of 10YR 6/6 and 10YR 5/1 respectively -The "g" suffix has been removed because the gray color is on the ped exterior, not necessarily gleyed -"Thin clay skins are common are common on faces while some very thin clay coatings penetrate the interiors" -"Lower boundary clear" -"This horizon was erratic in its distribution in the pit exposure. At the section sampled it was 6 inches thick but in some of the other parts of the pit it was absent, in the latter case the B23gA2'(2Bt3) horizon rests on the B25g (2Bt5).
2Bt5—69 to 84 centimeters (27.2 to 33.1 inches); variegated 50 percent reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/8) and 50 percent strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) clay; moderate medium prismatic structure; very firm; prominent grayish brown (10YR 5/2), moist, clay films on all faces of peds; prominent light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2), moist, iron depletions in matrix; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.6, pH meter; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # OSU0007931; observed in pit, small. -Assuming the matrix colors are the variegated 7.5yr 6/8 and 5/8, with the 2.5y 6/2 as redox depletions -Original designation for this horizon was B25g, again the "g" suffix has been removed as it seems the matrix is not gleyed, just the ped exteriors -"The grayish brown ped coatings are thin or medium thick clay skins that are continuous on the more prominent ped faces." -Structure noted as "weak to moderate"
2BCt1—84 to 97 centimeters (33.1 to 38.2 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1) clay; weak prismatic structure; very firm; clay films on vertical faces of peds; reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/8), moist, masses of oxidized iron in matrix and light gray (7.5YR 7/1), moist, iron depletions in matrix; fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.8. Lab sample # OSU0007932; observed in pit, small. This horizon is uneven in its thickness. It has developed in a stratum that contains considerable coal material.; -Horizon designated B3 in description -"Very carbonaceous clay" described as texture -"Massive or weakly prismatic structure" -"some thin extensive clay coatings on the vertical faces"
2BCt2—97 to 109 centimeters (38.2 to 42.9 inches); variegated 50 percent yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) and 50 percent light gray (2.5Y 7/2) clay; weak coarse prismatic parts to weak angular blocky structure; very firm; prominent dark gray (10YR 4/1), moist, clay films on all faces of peds; fragments. Lab sample # OSU0007933; observed in pit, small. Horizon designated as B3-C1; some of the coatings are derived from the B3 horizon.
2CBg—109 to 117 centimeters (42.9 to 46.1 inches); gray (5Y 6/1) clay; weak prismatic parts to weak platy structure; prominent dark gray (10YR 4/1), moist, silt coats on vertical faces of peds and distinct grayish brown (10YR 5/2), moist, silt coats on top faces of peds; prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/8), moist, masses of oxidized iron in matrix; fragments. Lab sample # OSU0007934; observed in pit, small. Horizon designated as C1B3; -Added "g" as suffix since matrix is 5Y 6/1 -"Surface coatings are silty" -No structure size described
2Cr1—117 to 135 centimeters (46.1 to 53.1 inches); black (10YR 2/1) bedrock; fragments.; observed in auger, bucket. Weathered dark brown or black coal stratum.
2Cr2—135 to 168 centimeters (53.1 to 66.1 inches); gray (10YR 5/1) bedrock; light olive brown (2.5Y 5/6) prominent mottles; fragments. Lab sample # OSU0007935; observed in auger, bucket. -Horizon designated C3 -"Auger sample" -"Weathered clayey shale"
