    Oi—0 to 5 centimeters (0.0 to 2.0 inches); dark reddish brown (5YR 2/2); fragments; extremely acid, pH 4.0. Lab sample # OSU0009803. Mull of leaves and twigs of oaks, beech, soft maple, and other trees and shrubs. Covered with fresh leaf fall.
    Oe—5 to 8 centimeters (2.0 to 3.1 inches); dark reddish brown (5YR 2/2); fragments; extremely acid, pH 3.8; abrupt wavy boundary. Lab sample # OSU0009804. Mull of partly decomposed leaves and twigs of oaks, beech, soft maple, and other trees and shrubs. Slight amount of mineral matter mixed in among mull. Mull is somewhat laminated.
    A—8 to 11 centimeters (3.1 to 4.3 inches); very dark brown (10YR 2/2) and dark gray (10YR 4/1) Error; weak fine granular structure; very friable; fragments; extremely acid, pH 3.8; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # OSU0009805. Colors are variable within a few inches horizontally and fractions of an inch vertically. Sandstone fragments up to 2 inches in diameter common. Horizon varies from 1 to 2.5 inches thick within a few inches horizontally.
