A—0 to 8 centimeters (0.0 to 3.1 inches); brown (10YR 4/3), pale brown (10YR 6/3), dry; silt loam; weak very fine and fine subangular blocky structure; very friable; many (10.0) very fine roots throughout and common (3.0) fine and medium roots throughout; 5 percent by volume nonflat indurated 2-20-75 millimeter chert fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.8, hellige-truog; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # MU042807. There is a 0.5" thick Oi horizon - slightly decomposed leaves and twigs.
BA—8 to 18 centimeters (3.1 to 7.1 inches); brown (10YR 5/3) silt loam; weak thin platy structure; friable; common (3.0) very fine to medium roots throughout; 3 percent by volume nonflat indurated 2-20-75 millimeter chert fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.7, hellige-truog; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # MU042808. Pedon horizon designation was changed from E to BA because lab data showed an increase in clay and therefore should be part of the B, but not enough to be considered part of the argillic.
Bt1—18 to 28 centimeters (7.1 to 11.0 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) silt loam; weak very fine and fine subangular blocky structure; friable; common (3.0) very fine to medium roots throughout and few (0.5) coarse roots throughout; 10 percent faint clay films on all faces of peds; 5 percent by volume nonflat indurated 2-20-75 millimeter chert fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.8, hellige-truog; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # MU042809
Bt2—28 to 46 centimeters (11.0 to 18.1 inches); 50 percent brown (7.5YR 5/4) and 50 percent brown (10YR 5/3) gravelly silty clay loam; weak fine prismatic structure; friable; common (3.0) very fine to medium roots throughout and few (0.5) coarse roots throughout; 30 percent faint clay films on all faces of peds; 20 percent by volume nonflat indurated 2-20-75 millimeter chert fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.8, hellige-truog; clear wavy boundary. Lab sample # MU042810
Bt3—46 to 58 centimeters (18.1 to 22.8 inches); 50 percent light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) and 25 percent yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) and 25 percent brown (7.5YR 4/4) gravelly loam; weak very fine and fine subangular blocky structure; friable; common (3.0) very fine roots throughout and few (0.5) fine roots throughout; 30 percent faint clay films on all faces of peds; 5 percent by volume nonflat indurated 75-150-250 millimeter chert fragments and 20 percent by volume nonflat indurated 2-20-75 millimeter chert fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.9, hellige-truog; gradual wavy boundary. Lab sample # MU042811
2Btx1—58 to 86 centimeters (22.8 to 33.9 inches); 55 percent light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) and 45 percent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) extremely gravelly silt loam; weak very coarse prismatic parts to weak thin platy structure; very firm; brittle; few (0.5) very fine roots in cracks; 10 percent faint clay films on all faces of peds; 10 percent prominent yellowish red (5YR 5/8), moist, masses of oxidized iron throughout; 5 percent by volume 2-20-75 millimeter dolomite (dolostone) fragments and 5 percent by volume 2-20-75 millimeter sandstone, unspecified fragments and 10 percent by volume 75-150-250 millimeter sandstone, unspecified fragments and 15 percent by volume nonflat indurated 75-150-250 millimeter chert fragments and 30 percent by volume nonflat indurated 2-20-75 millimeter chert fragments; very strongly acid, pH 4.7, hellige-truog; gradual wavy boundary. Lab sample # MU042812. Gray seams are 1/4 inch wide occuring vertically along Prism faces 13 to 16 inches apart. Gray seams are 10YR 6/2 and 6/1 (10YR4/1 in very fine root mat areas). Gray seams are somewhat obscurred by high coarse fragment content.; 90% brittle.
2Btx2—86 to 122 centimeters (33.9 to 48.0 inches); 60 percent yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) and 40 percent pale brown (10YR 6/3) extremely gravelly silt loam; moderate very coarse prismatic structure; very firm; brittle; 10 percent faint clay films on all faces of peds; 5 percent by volume 2-20-75 millimeter sandstone, unspecified fragments and 5 percent by volume nonflat indurated 75-150-250 millimeter chert fragments and 15 percent by volume 75-150-250 millimeter sandstone, unspecified fragments and 35 percent by volume nonflat indurated 2-20-75 millimeter chert fragments; strongly acid, pH 5.1, hellige-truog; gradual wavy boundary.
