Ap—0 to 20 centimeters (0.0 to 7.9 inches); very dark brown (10YR 2/2) fine sandy loam; weak and moderate fine and medium granular structure; very friable; fragments. Lab sample # 40A03358. Earthworms common and night crawlers numerous. The latter penetrate vertically down to 24-30 inches but cause essentially no mixing in the B21 horizon.
Bw1—20 to 36 centimeters (7.9 to 14.2 inches); olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) and dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) gravelly fine sandy loam; weak coarse subangular blocky parts to weak fine granular structure; friable; 15 percent by volume nonflat subangular very strongly coherent cemented 2-39-75 millimeter mixed fragments. Lab sample # 40A03359. A few non-glazed pores occur in the blocky peds.
Bw2—36 to 56 centimeters (14.2 to 22.0 inches); olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) gravelly fine sandy loam; weak and moderate platy structure; friable; 0.5 pores; 25 percent by volume nonflat subangular very strongly coherent cemented 2-39-75 millimeter mixed fragments. Lab sample # 40A03360. Pores are glazed; A few brown soft weathered finely micaceous ghosts occur. The soil to 22 inches was dug fairly easily with a shovel but a pick was also used.
Cd1—56 to 81 centimeters (22.0 to 31.9 inches); olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) gravelly fine sandy loam; weak and moderate coarse platy structure; firm; 3.0 fine pores; 18 percent by volume nonflat subangular very strongly coherent cemented 2-39-75 millimeter mixed fragments. Lab sample # 40A03361. This material felt sandy when first rubbed between the fingers but after some rubbing, felt like loam. A pick was used to loosen the material in this horizon and in those below.
Cd2—81 to 104 centimeters (31.9 to 40.9 inches); olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) gravelly fine sandy loam; weak and moderate coarse platy structure; firm; 3.0 fine pores; 18 percent by volume nonflat subangular very strongly coherent cemented 2-39-75 millimeter mixed fragments. Lab sample # 40A03362. Like the horizon above, water runs in from the side of the hole at about 22 inches. This material felt sandy when first rubbed between the fingers but after some rubbing, felt like loam.
Cd3—104 to 122 centimeters (40.9 to 48.0 inches); olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) gravelly fine sandy loam; weak and moderate medium platy structure; 0.5 pores; 20 percent olive (5Y 5/3), moist, and olive gray (5Y 5/2), moist,; 18 percent by volume nonflat subangular very strongly coherent cemented 2-39-75 millimeter mixed fragments. Lab sample # 40A03363. Few faint glazed pores visible on the peds.
Cd4—122 to 140 centimeters (48.0 to 55.1 inches); olive brown (2.5Y 4/4) gravelly fine sandy loam; massive parts to weak coarse platy; very firm; 10 percent by volume nonflat subangular weakly coherent cemented 25-38-51 millimeter mixed fragments and 18 percent by volume nonflat subangular very strongly coherent cemented 13-48-75 millimeter mixed fragments. Lab sample # 40A03364. 15-20 percent coarse skeleton in the 1/2-3 inch range. Brown micaceous ghosts 1-2 inches in diameter are fairly common. Finely micaceous.
