NOTES—; fragments. Thin sections were made of the 2 to 1mm granules. Some of these granules have weak peripheral clay orientation. Such peripheral clay orientation may increase the durability of the granules. The following mineralogical observations are for very fine sands; percentages are only rough approximations: 40% quartz, 40% feldspar, 20% altered feldspar aggregated and intergrowths of quartz and altered feldspar. Amphibole, pyroxene, epidote, chlorite, biotite (?), garnet, and an occasional apatite grain are the accessories observed. Coated grains and opaques are fairly common. More pyroxene in the till than in the loess-influenced portion. More quartz and less altered feldspar in the upper part of the solum.
